Summary: The Marte mine is located in the Chilean Andes on the Western edge of the Altiplano about 135 km east of the City of Copiapo. The mine site is located at an elevation of 4200 metres. The climate in the area is very dry and prone to seasonal extremes. The mill facilities were completed in late 1989 and full throughput was achieved in 1990. In 1992 the mine was closed due to low gold prices. Limited production continued through 1993 though no new ore was mined from the open pit. The mine has been on care and maintenance ever since. No open pit mining equipment remains on site.
